Alta Musica
Alta (loud, high) is how in the 1400s the music theoretician Johannes Tinctoris described the wind ensemble comprising shawm, bombarde and slide trumpet called upon in the Middle Ages to play for ceremonial occasions such as weddings, coronations and banquets.
In 1985 Rainer Böhm founded the ALTA MUSICA Ensemble with the aim of researching and performing what is now known as Alta Capella music and the ensemble has participated in several international Alta Capella meetings: in 1993 at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland, in 1994 at the International Double Reed Symposium in Utrecht, Holland and in 1995 at the Alta Capella Symposium in Alden Biesen, Belgium.
The purely wind ensemble has been expanded by adding voice and historical instruments such as fiddle, recorder, portative organ and string tambourine, allowing ALTA MUSICA to cover the whole spectrum of medieval music.
The ensemble's repertoire ranges from unison songs of the troubadours to the songs of Oswald von Wolkenstein, from three-part early French motets through chansons by Guillaume de Machaut, ballate by Francesco Landini and motets by Johannes Ciconia to four-part masses by the likes of Guillaume Dufay.
Concert tours and participation at various international Alta Capella festivals as well as radio and television recordings have taken the ALTA MUSICA ensemble to Belgium, Germany, France, Holland, Italy and Switzerland.
