"'Of the Wind Instruments the most excellent is the Cornett to imitate the human voice more than the other instruments'. If anyone doubts this high praise from the ancients, they should listen to this fabulous CD. The cornett is a highly difficult instrument to play and 'needs a lot of practice to make a good instrument', and heaven only knows how much Dongois and Hamada must have practised.

The two soloists match superfine technique with wonderful powers of expression, leaving one literally breathless. The virtuosic pieces by Corradini, Rognoni, Rossi, Scarani, Riccio and Castello, lovely and radiant like a picture by Caravaggio, succeed in striking chords in one's spirit in such a way that it is difficult when hearing them not to be carried away by "lymphatic frenzy".

Palestrina (diminished and arranged by Giovanni Bassano), Cipriano de Rore (reworked and "given a fresh twist" for virtuoso performance by Giovanni Battista Bovicelli) and Giovanni Gabrieli complete the splendid tapestry presented, with the sensitive participation of two consummate keyboard virtuosi in Lohff and Clerc, by Dongois and Hamada: outstanding among their accomplished peers."
